Each year the American Library Association honors outstanding literature for young people.  Considered the Academy Awards of book publishing for young people, the Newbery and Caldecott are awarded to books published in the United States during the previous year which demonstrate outstanding writing and illustration. The Pura Belpre Illustrator Award, and Pura Belpre Author Award are given to Latino authors and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children's books.  The Coretta Scott King Author Award, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and John Steptoe New Talent Author Award are given to African American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults.  The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award is given for the most distinguished informational book for children published in 2005.  The Michael Printz Award is given for literary excellence in Young Adult Literature.  The new Theodore Seuss Geisel Award is given to an outstanding Beginning Reader.

The accompanying list by ages includes these high awards and the honor books in each category.  They are available to order and purchase on this website.  Enjoy!
